Text Steganography: Hiding Secrets in Plain Sentences
Text steganography is the art of concealing confidential messages within ordinary, natural-language sentences. Learn how binary zero-width space interleaving allows covert data to pass through plain sight.
1. The Challenge of Text Steganography
In high-resolution color photographs, an engineer can alter thousands of pixels without anyone noticing. But text documents have traditionally been the hardest medium for steganography because a single altered letter or grammatical flaw is immediately obvious to human readers.
Text steganography solves this through two fundamental approaches: linguistic substitution (modifying sentence structure) and typographical code-point interleaving.
2. Binary Stream Interleaving Mechanics
HideMyMessages implements typographical interleaving using zero-width spaces:
- You provide an innocent cover sentence: "The project report has been submitted for review."
- You type your confidential message: "Server password is BlueMoon$99".
- The confidential message is encrypted with AES-256-GCM.
- The ciphertext is converted into an invisible binary stream of
U+200B(0) andU+200C(1) codepoints. - The invisible stream is injected between the words of your cover sentence.
When the recipient copies the cover sentence, they copy the invisible bitstream along with it. When pasted into the HideMyMessages Decoder, the original secret is restored in milliseconds.
