Security & Cryptography Architecture

Engineering Whitepaper • W3C Web Cryptography API Implementation

1. Zero-Knowledge Client-Side Architecture

HideMyMessages is engineered on a strict zero-knowledge security model. 100% of data manipulation, Unicode byte tagging, zero-width space interleaving, image pixel bit-shifting, and cryptographic encryption execute exclusively inside your local web browser's isolated JavaScript sandbox. No plaintexts, passwords, salts, or encoded payloads are transmitted over any network socket.

AES-256-GCM Cipher

Galois/Counter Mode provides authenticated symmetric encryption with 128-bit authentication tags ensuring both data secrecy and integrity.

PBKDF2 Key Derivation

100,000 iterations of SHA-256 with cryptographically secure pseudo-random 16-byte salts mitigate GPU brute-force attempts.

W3C WebCrypto API

Utilizes native browser window.crypto.subtle hardware primitives rather than unvetted third-party JavaScript libraries.

Ephemerality & Memory Safety

Passwords and intermediate buffers exist only in transient browser RAM during execution and are discarded upon tab closure.

2. Mathematical Security Against Steganalysis

Steganography provides security through obscurity by concealing the transmission event, while cryptography provides mathematical security. HideMyMessages fuses both layers: even if an adversary detects non-printing Unicode tag codepoints or LSB variations, they encounter high-entropy AES-256-GCM ciphertext that is mathematically indistinguishable from random noise.

3. Local Storage Vault Encryption

When users save drafts or extracted notes to the optional local vault, entries are stored exclusively in the browser's localStorage partition. Data never synchronizes to cloud servers, satisfying rigorous GDPR and CCPA privacy benchmarks.
