Emoji Steganography (Textmoji): How Invisible Tags Work
Emoji steganography (often called Textmoji) allows you to conceal hundreds of characters inside a single everyday emoji glyph. Here is the technical mechanics of Unicode Plane 14 tag characters.
1. The Concept of Emoji Carriers
Emojis have become the universal language of mobile and internet communication. Billions of emojis are sent daily across WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and iMessage. Because emojis are ubiquitous, an emoji sent in a chat message attracts zero suspicion from network monitors or casual observers.
Emoji steganography takes advantage of this by turning an everyday graphic symbol (such as 🤫, 😊, 🔒, or 🍕) into a Trojan horse carrier for encrypted or confidential data.
2. Unicode Plane 14 Tag Architecture (UTS #51)
The Unicode Standard organizes its vast library of over 149,000 characters into 17 "Planes", each containing 65,536 codepoints. Plane 14 (codepoints U+E0000 through U+E007F) is officially designated as the Special Purpose Plane.
Under Unicode Technical Standard #51 (UTS #51), the Unicode Consortium allocated 95 Tag Characters spanning from U+E0020 (TAG SPACE) through U+E007E (TAG TILDE). These tag codepoints correspond 1:1 with standard printable ASCII characters (from 0x20 space to 0x7E tilde), shifted by a fixed hexadecimal offset of +0xE0000.
function asciiToTag(char) {
const code = char.charCodeAt(0);
return String.fromCodePoint(0xE0000 + code);
}
3. Why Don't Mobile Screens Display Tag Characters?
When an operating system text engine (such as Apple CoreText on iOS, HarfBuzz on Android/Linux, or DirectWrite on Windows) encounters Plane 14 tag characters, it consults the system font files. Because tag characters were designed as invisible formatting metadata rather than graphic symbols, font engines assign them zero horizontal advance width and render no glyph geometry.
The result is that when a recipient views the string, only the carrier emoji is drawn on screen. However, when the recipient selects and copies that emoji bubble, the clipboard captures the entire underlying string buffer, including all invisible Plane 14 codepoints.
