Image Steganography & Messaging Tests

PNG vs. JPEG for Secret Data: Which Survives WhatsApp?

We performed real transmission experiments uploading secret-bearing PNG and JPEG photographs across the top 5 messaging platforms. Discover which formats survive social media compression algorithms.

1. The Problem: Social Media Image Compression

Millions of users send photos across WhatsApp and Telegram assuming that what they send is what the recipient receives. However, messaging networks operate massive recompression pipelines designed to minimize bandwidth costs.

When you send a photograph via standard photo gallery picker, platforms automatically resize the resolution, re-encode pixels using lossy WebP or aggressive JPEG DCT quantization, and strip all EXIF metadata. For steganography, this recompression is catastrophic—it completely overwrites Least Significant Bits (LSB).

2. Real-World Transmission Results

Our laboratory conducted systematic transmission tests with both lossless PNG LSB images and JPEG comment files:

Platform & Sending Method PNG LSB Survival JPEG COM Survival Verdict
WhatsApp (Standard Gallery Photo) 0% (Corrupted) 0% (Stripped) FAILED (Recompressed)
WhatsApp (Send as Document: 📎 → Document) 100% (Bit-Exact) 100% (Bit-Exact) PERFECT PASS
Telegram (Send as Uncompressed File) 100% (Bit-Exact) 100% (Bit-Exact) PERFECT PASS
Discord (Standard Attachment) 100% (Bit-Exact) 100% (Bit-Exact) PERFECT PASS
Instagram Direct Message 0% (Corrupted) 0% (Stripped) FAILED (Recompressed)
The Golden Rule for Image Steganography:

Always send your steganographic image as a Document / File attachment (not as a standard photo). This instructs WhatsApp and Telegram to transfer the raw binary file bit-for-bit without triggering their image compression pipeline.
