Forensic Inspection Tutorial
How to Detect & Decode Hidden Emoji Messages (Step by Step)
Did you receive a suspicious emoji on WhatsApp or Telegram that you suspect carries a secret message? Here is the step-by-step forensic guide to inspecting, decoding, and decrypting hidden emoji payloads.
Method 1: Use the HideMyMessages Universal Decoder (Fastest)
You don't need any programming skills or forensic software to reveal hidden text. The fastest and most accurate method is using the free browser decoder:
- In your messaging app (WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, etc.), long-press or right-click the suspicious emoji and select Copy.
- Open HideMyMessages Universal Decoder in any browser.
- Paste the copied emoji into the input field.
- The decoder will instantly analyze the clipboard string and display:
- Whether hidden characters are present.
- Exact count of invisible Unicode Plane 14 tags and zero-width codes.
- The extracted secret message.
- Whether AES-256 encryption was applied (prompting for the passphrase if locked).
Method 2: Inspecting Codepoints in Chrome DevTools
If you are a developer or forensic investigator, you can inspect the raw Unicode codepoints using any browser console:
- Press F12 (or Cmd + Option + I on macOS) to open Chrome Developer Tools.
- Switch to the Console tab.
- Create a variable containing the copied emoji and inspect its codepoints:
const str = "🤫"; // Paste your copied emoji between quotes
console.log("Length:", str.length);
console.log("Codepoints:", Array.from(str).map(c => "U+" + c.codePointAt(0).toString(16).toUpperCase())); - If the output displays codepoints in the range
U+E0020throughU+E007E, the emoji contains steganographic Plane 14 tag characters.
